How RECICLOS works

RECICLOS’ aim is to manage to get the packaging recycling model that has been operating for 20 years through yellow containers to evolve thanks to mobile technology and green incentives. RECICLOS is looking to develop the recycling habit through rewards. Each time citizens throw away their cans and drinks bottles in the yellow container and record it in the RECICLOS system, they will be a winner and will make the environment a winner too!

Focusing on the close proximity and easy use of the yellow container, RECICLOS proposes that citizens continue to collaborate by protecting the environment through recycling and, at the same time, improve their immediate surroundings.

This solution modernises infrastructures that already exist (yellow and blue containers), that citizens use on a massive scale (+32% since 2015) and are familiar with, incorporating mobile technology to adapt these infrastructures to these new habits. Thanks to this development, we will manage to recycle even more cans and plastic drinks bottles without changing the established habits of waste separation and, at the same time, will encourage responsible consumption habits.

With the RECICLOS return and reward system, Ecoembes updates and boosts its commitment to the circular economy, adhering to the ambitious environmental goals set out in European directives.

When?

When?

The pilot Project began in June 2019 in Catalonia. In 2021 RECICLOS will be operational in the majority of Spain’s autonomous communities.

Where?

Where?

It is already operational in four towns in Catalonia (Sant Boi de Llobregat, Igualada and Granollers, Pla de L’Estany), with a highly positive response on the part of citizens and city councils. It will also be implemented in La Rioja (Calahorra) and the Balearic Islands (Ciudadela) and, before the years’ end, in another five autonomous communities. (Murcia, Comunidad Valenciana…).

How?

How?

The user must firstly register in the RECICLOS web app, then take a photo of the bar codes on the tins and plastic drinks bottles they consume with their phone. Finally, the user should deposit them in their usual yellow container or in the machines located in busy places (stations, airports, universities…) when recycling them.

How do the incentives work?

The Return and Reward System (RRS) rewards the general public’s commitment to the environment through recycling, offering them sustainable or social incentives (‘green’ mobility, responsible consumption, donations to NGOs). That is to say, it rewards recycling citizens while encouraging responsible consumption and environmental and/or social improvements to their immediate surroundings.

With the development of this recycling model, not only do we contribute to keeping our streets clean, we also encourage ever more sustainable mobility, the development of our neighbourhoods’ businesses and an improvement to our community. With RECICLOS, a commitment to recycling turns into a benefit for your community.
