Carrefour, Dondelotiro and TheCircularLab test a system in Logroño that helps improve recycling through smart receipts

TheCircularLab, the innovation center of Ecoembes located in Logroño, hosted a pilot test of the TagItSmart program (initiative funded by the European Commission as part of the Horizon 2020 program), whose objective is to turn every everyday items into “smart” objects by using a digital system to guarantee their traceability.

Specifically for this test, Carrefour, in collaboration with Dondelotiro.com, developed an application that, when the receipt is scanned, lets shoppers know how to recycle each of the products contained in their basket. The distribution company conducted the first test of the app in TheCircularLab under the watchful eye of 50 customers of the French company.

In the test environment, customers did their shopping as usual by passing their products through the check-out and then receiving the receipt with a barcode on it that they scanned using the application. The app automatically sorts the products into virtual containers so shoppers later know which container to discard the waste into.

This collaboration between Carrefour and TheCircularLab of Ecoembes represents a step forward in the development of solutions that guarantee the environmental sustainability of the planet and improve social development.
